Skin-to-Skin Contact

Skin-to-skin contact is important immediately following birth for both vaginal and caesarean births. Skin-to-skin helps to regulate baby’s temperature, blood sugar, and vital signs. A mother who practices skin-to-skin is more connected to her baby. Babies who are skin-to-skin cry less, settle easier and have less pain during painful procedures. Skin-to-skin contact has been proven to improve breastfeeding success. Premature infants and their parents also benefit from skin-to-skin (kangaroo-care).
